Studying in a university is not as luxurious and fun as we might imagine it to be. Often we find ourselves in unimaginable situations, you may actually even go to jail for it.

This article is about a protest that recently took place at the University of  Zululand. Apparently, 32 students were arrested for torching two police vehicles and a building last Thursday . University sources revealed that a student protest over meal allowances took a bad turn against staff and police.
The university was shut down, out of fear for the safety of both students and staff. Students were ordered to vacate residences with immediate effect.

Put on the spotlight, SRC deputy, Ndumiso Ntshagase condemned the damages to property, saying that the university property should not be damaged. Ntshangase also claims that not all those who were arrested are guilty, that some were not from the university.
"Students were hungry and had to go on strike, each month students receive R1500 monthly food allowances  but this did not happen yesterday, students rely on this", he said. Ntshangase claimed that the institution and NSFAS were also to blame. He gave assurances that students would support their arrested counterparts when they make court appearances, after which they will settle to make resolutions with the management.

What are we doing, who are we talking to...
We burn institutions to the ground and torch state resources to ash. We want to be heard, we want there to be a place for our opinions but are we really going about it the right way, who is right, are the police to shove us into vans and put us in cells for refusing to go to class on an empty stomach?

  1. The is nothing wrong with what the students did, sometimes you could blame NSFAS while allowances are stolen by the institutions ,This is a lesson for another universities also and those students should be released from jail,How do we study and attend classes with empty stomach ? WHY do we even apply for bursaries if they won't meet our needs.

    1. Especially because it is known that many students depend on these bursaries to survive while they further their studies. its a very sad and unfair situation

  2. This is very complicated where are we to go if the very same bursaries cant seem to keep up with their promises. We are hungry for education and even willing to work to our full potential but we need tuition fees and allowances paid for us.

  3. It's true that being a student isn't easy and we really need education.. Bearing in mind that we lack the resources to study.. Especially when it comes to financial needs..

  4. I totally agree with Anathi, going to lectures with empty stomachs makes no sense to me.How are we suppose to focus in class while we are starving?
Even our brain may not function well when we are hungry.

  5. I can not judge what the students did right or wrong. They did what they thought was right and would come up with solutions on time... but burning police vehicles...? I don't support that.

    1. I'm not picking sides, but I don't think the students would just run and burn police vehicles
so much has not been revealed to the public regarding this matter

  6. I think we actually do not know how we should voice out our problems to be heard. Maybe this is the only language our leaders can hear but the question is if we destroy what is already there don't we think that we are not going anywhere we'll just keep starting afresh.

    1. Because after each time, more money is used to fix the mess that we made when we were doing all things crazy.
then we expect that our demands are attended to, where do we expect government to raise these funds

  7. Its a sad situation cause the police will maintain that they were doing their job. I don't promote the damage to property,
Our country is faced with corruption at its core form, these funding institutions are sponsored but the middle men are the ones greedy and self centered that they mismanage they funds rightfully deserved by the students. Its a country wide issue and unfortunately these people are killing the future of this country.

  8. I fully support their movement, but to torch the police van and vandalise school premesis is not right because they will be costing an institution and also ruining themselves a school with good resources..... Yes student should protest because no brain can function when a student has an empty stomach.
