"MENSTRUATION IS NOT A CHOICE BUT A NATURASL OCCURANCE"
Free sanitary towels to be provided for female learners from poor to working class families.
The ANC Women's League says that unemployed women should learn to produce sanitary towels and run a business. Their businesses will then become the source for government issued pads.
Government supplies learners with things like stationery, free condoms, to name a few. Mostly the suppliers are male owned businesses, in particular, white. Apparently, government had in the past committed to supply sanitary towels, these were never received by other provinces, unfortunately.
"Various reports have indicated that the majority of girl learners who cannot afford sanitary towels resort to unhygienic methods like using clothes rags and newspapers during their menstruation and that poses health risks to them", said Meokgo Matuba, the ANCWL secretary general.
Matuba also said that the ANCWL would call upon all its members to embark on a treasury campaign. The aim is to add sanitary towels into the list of items that are zero rated on VAT.
It is long overdue, the fact that the distribution of condoms and school visits to educate learners about sexual activities became a priority is bad enough. The price of pads is way high, not all girls can afford them, the ANC Women's League is on the right track this time, taking a direction that should have been taken long ago.

The ANCWL is indeed in the right track because some female students would pass days not going to school being left out only because of pads. Now that they are giving them out they are not just saving them from the embarrassment but giving them a brighter future.
ReplyDeleteThis would do good for many girls as they will be able to attend school "even if it's that time of the month" without being ashamed as they will have sanitary pads.
ReplyDeleteWomen should really be trained. It is so heart breaking to see a child not go to school because they are on their periods and they do not have sanitary towels. Such projects deserve a lot of recognition
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good Idea.. .
ReplyDeleteIt's a great thing to give free sanitary towels because sone people can't afford them.
